Description: A very nice example of the first printing of the first edition, finely bound and issued in a limited edition of 500 copies signed by the author. This is copy number 160. This copy belonged to the publisher Tom Maschler, and bears his personal bookplate, which was specially designed for him by Quentin Blake. Original gilt cloth-spine patterned paper-covered boards. 460 pages. 

Signed by John Fowles to the limitation page. The book has been carefully stored, and has no obvious signs of wear (see pictures). Internally clean and bright (see pictures). Binding sound and square. An excellent example.
