fold-out 1949 official highway map of Maine, printed more than 85 years
ago.
- The map opens to 31" x 22½"
and has
great detail on old road alignments, including U.S. Routes 1 and 2,
with cartography by the State Highway Department.
- In addition to numbered roads in the
state it also identifies seven named highways as designated by the
state
legislature: Pine Tree Trail, Arnold Highway, Arnold Trail, Douglas
Highway, Moosehead Trail, Blue Star Memorial Highway, and Aroostook
Scenic Highway.
- There are inset plans of Houlton, Rumford, Bangor-Brewer,
Kittery,
Portland, Lewiston-Auburn, Belfast, Brunswick, Augusta, Rockland, and
Waterville-Winslow.
- There's also a golf course directory and a list of parks
and memorials.
- The color photo on the rear cover shows the West Quoddy Head
Lighthouse, the only "candy striped" tower in the United States. It is
situated on the easternmost point of the contiguous U.S.
