Hinamatsuri is a Shinto holiday in Japan dating back to pre historic times around the spring March 3.
Dolls were set in elaborate displays only once a year. Originally to be burned in the fall. However the sets had become so elegant in the Edo and Meiji eras 19th c that families would pas them down as heirlooms.
This doll was a musician — one of five. Probably a flute player.
