Lithops are small, slow growing plants which mimic the pebbles among which they grow in the arid regions of South Africa and Nambia. They display a variety of colours and patterns and because they are small a varied collection can be assembled on a window sill.  They are quite easy to grow as long as an open free draining compost is used and water is withheld after flowering in the Autumn until the new plant body emerges the following Spring.  Lithops germinate best at a day time temperature of 20-25 degrees with significantly cooler nights. Higher temperatures slow germination and may inhibit germination altogether!

Keep seeds in cool dark place until ready to sow.  Lithops seeds are long lived and remain viable for several years.Good growing.

Lithops seeds are very small, please take care when opening envelopes.

Test sowings confirm a good level of germination.

Buyers outside UK and Europe please email me for postal rates and be aware of import restrictions. I cannot supply phytosanitary certificates nor be responsible for confiscations by local custom authorities.

There are many web sites dedicated to Lithops and their cultivation.

A search of Google images will give an idea of how the mature plants will look.

Brief cultivation notes..

Lithops germinate readily from seed.  Seed remains viable for several years.  Sow in any free draining compost, I use good quality John Innes No. 1 with at least 50% added fine grit or perlite.  Stand the pots of compost in cooled boiled water until surface appears damp. Then remove and stand for awhile to drain any excess water. Carefully open seed packet and sprinkle over the surface of the pot.   Add a very thin layer of fine grit to inhibit algal growth on the surface.  Then seal in a plastic bag and place in a warm, light (not direct sunlight) place such as a heated propagator.  Germination should start to occur within a week or two.  After 2 or 3 weeks, when germination is complete, remove from the plastic bag and place in a bright well ventilated situation, but protect from direct sunlight for the first few months.  Mist frequently with water to prevent the tiny seedlings drying out.  After seven or eight months the seedlings can be repotted, reduce watering at this time to prevent root damage.   At this stage the little plants will start to develop the colours and patterns of mature plants.
