Here is a rare Edison Royal Purple cylinder, #29046.  Violinist Albert Spalding performs the traditional song "Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes", with piano by Andre Benoist.  This was recorded on October 1, 1919, and Edison released the cylinder in March 1920.   Lovely arrangement and playing, a wonderful listen. The cylinder plays well with fairly limited surface noise.

Edison marketed Royal Purples from 1917 to 1921, issuing 76 cylinders in total.  They were competition for Victor Red Seal records.  This was overall a marketing failure, and they did not sell well.  The cylinders were (relatively) expensive, and Victor had most of the world's great musical artists under contract.  Also, most cylinder machine owners had little interest in serious classical music.  Edison used Diamond Discs for classical music, and over the years few of these recordings were released on cylinder records.  The Purples are very rare, this is the first one I have had in over a year.  If this is what you like, do not pass it up!
