An original antique English Arts & Craft cot, circa 1900, with great charm. It is stamped W. Avery, possibly the furniture maker William Avery from the Tetsworth/Radnage area near High Wycombe, circa 1895 & 1899, and is made from oak with metal fittings and has wooden wheels.

The condition is very good and we enjoyed using it for our children. The cot has been stored for 25 years in the attic, which seems to have caused the oak grain to open in three places, see photograph of all pieces lying flat. The grain has opened in: the end frame, pictured left, by the rod catch of the corner post; one vertical slat to the left of the centre inverted-heart detail; level with the base on the corner post on the right end frame. I have polished the cot three times with traditional bees wax to help close up the grain in these areas. The original hessian fabric base will need attention as it is finally failing in places after 120 years, see photograph, also on the base frame are signs of a few old woodworm holes, treated before we bought it.

A new mattress will be needed but these are easily obtainable.

Sizes: width 12.5cm x 114cm high x 60.6cm deep. The cot base is 104.4cm wide x 53.5cm deep. Inside the cot is 114.8cm wide x 61cm to the mid-point of the side top rail x 55.3 cm deep. The square corner posts are 3.5cm each side.

Approximate weight using the photo of the pieces laid flat on the floor clockwise from top left: end piece 4kg, base 4kg, end piece 3kg, sliding side panel 2kg, fixed side panel 2.5kg. Total 15.5kg (possibly a bit more)

Buyer collects or happy to help liaise for collection (five parts to the cot).
