This is a fantastic pair of Antique Old Civil War Era Southern Folk Art Neoclassical Andirons, comprised of cast iron, and approximately dating to the Civil War or Reconstruction Era. These works depict two cherubs or putti, holding lamps above their heads with large flames blazing outward. These works stand on stylized lion-paw feet. One of the andirons appears to be stamped on the verso: "MADE IN ASHEVILLE...(?)HAM FOUNDRY." From all of my research, I could not find any information on a foundry in Asheville, North Carolina, but perhaps you know more about the maker? Obviously, these are very rare pieces and the foundry that is mentioned was likely very short-lived, and probably closed down during the American Civil War. Approximately 25 inches tall x 13 1/2 inches wide (not including the back pieces.) Good condition for 100+ years of age, with decades of soot, oxidation, scuffing and storage wear, etc. (please see photos.) Acquired from an old, deceased estate in San Gabriel Valley, California. Priced to sell. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Please check out my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks!
