This is a fine and masterful RARE Antique Early Texas Plein Air Impressionist Landscape Oil Painting on artist board, by renowned and seldomly seen on the market San Antonio Impressionist painter, Francis Austin Cloonan (1865 - 1950.) This small gem depicts a lovely Texas landscape scene, with bluebonnet flower imbued hills in the distance, and a small road in the center of the scene. Stonework walls and trees flank each side of the painting. This piece likely dates to the 1920's - early 1930's. Signed: "F.A. Cloonan" in the lower right corner. Approximately 7 1/4 x 11 1/4 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 6 x 10 inches. Very good condition for age, with some light speckles of paint loss, and light edge wear to the original period gilded frame (please see photos.) Acquired in Southern Texas, United States. Cloonan, Francis Austin (Frank). 1865-1950. San Antonio.  Muralist, decorative painter, merchant.

Cloonan was born in Ireland and came to San Antonio about 1908. There he sold paint supplies

under the trade name Cloonan and Osborn.  In the 1920's, he executed decorative paintings in San Antonio churches.

He died in a San Antonio hospital and was buried in the city.
