This is a gorgeous and masterfully rendered Fine Antique Old 19th c. Impressionist Seascape Painting, watercolor and gouache on paper, depicting the old island of Gibraltar. This painting is remarkable intricate, and highlights the famed Moorish Castle, with extremely fine attention and detail given to every blade of grass, stone brick and ocean wave. Additionally, the beams of sunlight reaching through the thick bands of cloud cover are rendered in a way that impresses any viewer. This is clearly the work of a master artist. This painting is signed: “J. Dove” in the lower right. Obviously, I first thought this may be a work by the famed modernist painter Arthur Dove (1880 - 1946.) I don’t believe it is, but this is an uncommon surname in the art world, and the level of mastery shown in this piece leads me to believe the name may have been a pseudonym for a renowned artist. Additionally, a label on the verso reads: “John Wanamaker New York. Mrs. F.J. Meehan. 2773 Webster Ave, Bronx.” I could not find much information on the J. Dove, but perhaps you know more about the artist and their work? Approximately 22 7/8 x 29 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 19 1/4 x 25 1/2 inches.  Acquired in Orange County, California. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer.
