This is an outstanding and Antique Old Americana Nautical Ship Model Still Life Oil Painting on Artist Board, signed and dated: “Mrs. A.N. Sanders - 1928” in the lower right corner. This artwork is a still life depicting a model schooner ship, a green ashtray with a lit cigarette on a wooden table, with an impressionistic landscape painting visible on the yellow painted wall in the distance. This piece is clearly influenced by early European Impressionism and Post-Impressionism and is very reminiscent of Vincent Van Gogh. If someone told me this was an early Van Gogh painting, without looking at the signature, I might believe them. This painting was originally acquired from a small antique market in West Texas, according to the story I was told. I presume that the artist was also a Texan. My research has revealed that there was an African American man named A.N. Sanders born in 1866, who’s residence in 1940 was the town of Morris, Texas. His wife was named Luella Sanders. During this era, women were discouraged from being artists and commonly signed “Mrs...(husband’s name.) It is possible that this work was created by an African American painter Luella Sanders, but I cannot be certain. This work is in overall good condition, with light craquelure throughout, and some areas of scuffing and minor paint loss due to age (please see photos.) Original gilded frame has some edge wear, scuffing and gilding loss. Approximately 20 7/8 x 24 7/8 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 18 1/8 x 22 1/8 inches. Acquired in Los Angeles County, California. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Please check my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks!
