Title: Library of Safety Standard Films (1918), including Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, D. W. Griffith, Mack Sennett, etc.
Publication: Buffalo: United Projector and Film Co., (1918)
Edition: First Printing

Description: Hardcover. 8vo, embossed cloth, very good. With 5 booklets of monthly new releases also included. 156 pp. Divided into 3 main categories -- religious, educational and entertainment -- but actually a comprehensive catalog, despite the title, of drama, comedy, farces, etc., each film with a paragraph describing the action, plus giving the film company and other details. Chaplin's "Essanay" films are given substantial space: A Night at the Show, Shanghaied, The Jitney Elopement, In the Park, Police, Movie Nuts, Love and Lunch (Keystone), and the Champion are listed, along with works by Harold Lloyd, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Mack Sennett, nine episodes of The Perils of Pauline, many of the Exploits of Elaine, a Little Johnny film "When Charlie Was A Child" of Little Johnny dreaming he is Charlie Chaplin, a small thumbnail photo of Chaplin in "The Champion," and many other dramas, educational films, historical films including works on WWI up to June 1918, etc. The inserts include mention of Judith of Bethulia by DW Griffith, Chaplin's "The Pawn Shop," an early film produced by Mutual in 1916, his 6th film for that company. Very rare in the trade and scarce in libraries, too, with OCLC locating only 2 holdings of the Buffalo-based edition (the company seems to have moved to Cleveland later in 1918) and only 2 or 3 of the Cleveland edition. Extremely early film catalog, documenting many works that are now lost. Very good.
