J. Gould & H. C. Richter Hand Colored Litho. Birds of Great Britain
Sylvia cinerea - Common Whitethroat

Here’s an exceptional find! This hand-colored antique print from John Gould’s “The Birds of Great Britain” dates from between 1862-73. This piece elegantly displays two Common Whitethroats (Sylvia cinerea). The gorgeously detailed birds are perched in a fruiting blackberry cane with a Red Admiral butterfly next to a munched leaf.

The words on the piece are, from left to right: “J.Gould & HC Richter, del et lith.”; “SYLVIA CINEREA.”; “Walter, Imp.” Unlike the contemporary reproductions of Gould’s work, these are hand-colored and not printed lithographs, as evidenced by the lack of a dot matrix under a lens. This dates them as an original part of the 1862-73 editions.

The piece is framed behind glass in its original, antique, lacquered, quarter-sawn oak frame. A muted gold gilt accent enhances the transition between the frame and the image. Print comes ready to hang, out of the box.

Condition:

The print and frame are in EXCELLENT condition. The frame has some light surface wear, but nothing that greatly detracts from the presentation. The print is mostly clean with some exceedingly minor light foxing.

Measurements (approx):

Frame size: 17.2” x 21.1” x 1.4” thick
Displayed image size: 13.75” x 17.5”
