This is a very colorful modernist oil painting that seems to depict a wharf of buildings in Provincetown, Cape Cod or thereabouts. It is very well painted with hints of impasto and a confident approach to painting style and composition. It is oil on board, measuring 9” x 12” and comes in a very attractive walnut custom frame of the period which features a linen liner. Overall framed dimensions are 12” x 15”. From the age of the artist board, I would date the work to late 1960’s or early 1970’s. It is unsigned, but surely the work of a noted artist.
The painting was featured with other paintings by Baltimore artist Karl Metzler (1909-1995). It could well be one of his unsigned works, as the style is similar to his. He was a member of a group of modern Baltimore painters known to have summered on Cape Cod in the 50’s-70’s. It is in very good condition with no damage or issues to report. It had been recently cleaned and varnished, probably in the past 5-10 years.
A nice modernist scene that would enliven any art collection or beach house. Ready to hang on your wall of choice.
