SMS Emden HMAS Sydney Battle of Cocos Silver Medal, Made with Coin Recovered from Wreck *RARE*

1887 8 Reales Recovered from Commerce Raider CL Emden

On November 9, 1914, Light Cruiser HMAS Sydney encountered Light Cruiser SMS Emden, which was operating as a Commerce Raider.  In the ensuing Battle of Cocos, Sydney scored over 100 hits on the Emden, which was ran aground and scuttled.  Out of a crew of 376, 133 had perished. 6,249 Mexican silver coins were recovered from the wreck.  These coins had likely been plundered from merchant ships.  In 1918, 1,000 of these coins were mounted as medallions by Sydney Jeweler W. Kerr in order to commemorate the victory.
