Function/Working of a Power Steering Pump
The power steering pump is driven by the engine's crankshaft via a belt-pulley mechanism. The pump is usually located in the front of the engine, adjacent to the alternator or AC compressor. The steering pump compresses the hydraulic fluid at a rate directly proportional to the speed of the engine. The pump is built as such to provide the required pressure in different engine conditions such as idling or running at high speeds.

| The most common symptoms associated with power steering pump failure is you will feel difficulty in turning the steering wheel. The steering wheel of your vehicle will feel very stiff than usual and you will have to use a lot of strength & force just to make a basic turn. | When the power steering fluid which has turned to dark grey indicates oxidationd, it can cause the tubes that move the fluid to gum up, which leads to power steering failure. If you notice foams or bubbles present in the fluid, then it indicates water or air in the power steering line. |
