SUMMARY:
A very fine quality nickel cased pocket pedometer, made by a Jewish pedometer maker, Jacob H. Steward London
in ca. 1914.  The movement  by this maker, is beautifully  made and to a very high quality. The movement with the pedometer weight (finely blued)  as are all the springs and arm and counterweight nicely finished.

The movement with discreetly engraved small star of David (Magen Dovid) to rear plate, one of a small group of such pedometers I have handled over the years. This pedometer was clearly made by someone who had been apprenticed or worked under a master scientific instrument maker, most probably from Cracow in Poland or Prague, who entered this country during the period 1890-1910, when there was a vast migration of Jewish people from this countries. No doubt he changed his surname to asssimilate as so many immigrants did over the years

The pedometer has been serviced and lubed by my watch-maker,  however, please do not expect quartz quality distance measurement with a 110 year item. The pedometer is in very fine condition, and this is a great piece for any serious collector or romantic.

THE DIAL: 100% mint, the off-white enamel  dial with black Roman numerals in good order. Dial with a blued steel spade hand. Diameter is 37 mm. The crystal is also in excellent condition. The dial indicates 0-12 to the dial face for yards.

THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, made from solid brass with a formed and mercurial gilded cock. All springs still finely blued and holding the weight and arm under correct tension, it is a joy to use and works perfectly, showing minimal wear, even 110 years later. The pedometer arm and weight, likewise all screwed still finely blued and in good order. The pedometer is in very good working order for its age. As is typical of some of the best makers, and clearly this man also made watches. The brass plate discreetly engraved with a small star of David (Magen Dovid), so clearly a Jewish maker, most probably one of the many Russian and Polish immigrants who came into UK during the 1880-1910 period.

THE CASE: 100% mint, the nickel white metal case measures 43 mm outside diameter. The front and rear covers  cover closes tightly to the case. The rear case with crystal cover to allow operation of the pedometer in action to be seen.
