For your consideration is a striking original oil on canvas dating to the early 18th century from the circle of Herman van der Myn (1684–1741), depicting a three-quarter length portrait of a young boy holding a spear, wearing a blue drape over a red coat, and white stock.
Housed in a period antique carved gilt frame, the work radiates an abundance of character. There is a label attached to verso showing that the piece is from the collection of Lady Lilian Boyd (1873-1948), also known as Lady Lilian FitzClarence, who was the daughter of William George FitzClarence 2nd Earl of Munster and Wilhelmina FitzClarence, Countess of Munster.
The canvas has been lined during the 19th century and remains in a stable condition. There is light overall toning and some darkening but overall, the level of clarity and saturation is very good. Trivial paint losses and a light scratch can be noticed with scrutiny. A network of craquelure is seen throughout. The frame also remains stable, with small losses to corners, wear and some flaking to the surface, dirt and signs of age.
