Arnica montana is a perennial herb that is native to cold, mountainous regions of Europe, the produce pretty, aromatic yellow flowers. This alpine plant prefers peaty loams in a cool, shady position. It is frost resistant but drought tender, growing to 0.6m x 0.6m.
Arnica has a wide range medicinal applications that can assist with bruising, joints, inflammation and pain relief. Mainly used in creams and salves, Arnica may help to relieve muscular pain due to injury or exercise, reduce bruising and swelling, reduce arthritic pain and relieve painful insect bites.
Germination.
Arnica seed benefits from a short period of cold-moist stratification before sowing in the spring. The easiest way to do this is to mix your seed in a small amount of damp sand (1 teaspoon is enough), seal in a plastic bag and keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks sometime at the beginning of March.
Arnica seeds can be direct sown in early spring or late fall but are best started in flats of potting soil in early spring. Seeds should be barely covered and will germinate in one to three weeks. The seedlings are quite small and slow growing at first.
