This is a spectacular item. It is a high-grade casting made of resin, taken directly from a mold taken from the original specimen in what was formerly known as the Army Medical Museum (this would no longer be allowed).  It is not made of human bone nor does it contain any human body parts.

It is a superb reproduction (made here in the U.S.) of the skull of an officer in the 2nd South Carolina Infantry who was KIA at Antietam.  It demonstrates the graphic large entrance and exit wounds caused by a bullet (or possibly grape shot), resulting in an instantly fatal wound. The detail is phenomenal.

It is a highly unique gift for one who collects Civil War items, or Civil War medical and surgical items, especially those involving surgery or amputation.

I will also send a binder with all of the relevant information on the soldier, including his service records, family information, copies of newspaper article with his obituary, etc. There are 60 pages of material that I have compiled, they will be sent in a binder.

I felt that none of the mass-produced display stands sold online were appropriate to the beauty of this piece, nor commensurate with the era, so I designed and made this custom stand using pre-cut solid pine. The skull is held in place securely, yet is easily removable for examination.  It is made of solid pine, stained, and has a satin polyurethane finish. The solid brass rods and rosette have been artificially tarnished to give it an antiqued-look. The wooden base is 6 inches x 6 inches in size, and the entire piece measures 12 inches in height.

My price reflects the literally hundreds of hours, and money (to purchase books for research) it took me to obtain more information on the soldier and finally arrive at his identity.  His name is not recorded ANYWHERE, including in the files of the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, D.C.   It also reflects the design and building (by hand) of the display stand, and the antiquing process (done with professional grade supplies.)  Again, nothing except the casting itself is a production item, so there may be minor imperfections that were unavoidable (such as epoxy blobs, etc.).

Due to the custom design, I cannot accept returns of this item.  I have made every attempt to ensure the stand protects and securely displays the item.  The casting and stand shown in the photos are what you will receive - no other items shown in the photos are included -the listing includes only the casting and the stand.

The soldier's name and unit will only be divulged to the winning bidder.

The casting and stand shown in the photos are what you will receive.

An engraved solid brass plate with the soldier's name and unit can be added to the stand, if desired.
