There are 24 blocks since U & V share a block as well as X & Y.  Each block measures approximately 7 x 4-7/8 inch.  There is only 3/8 inch between the blocks across the width of the fabric (along the sides of each block), but there is 3/4 inch between the blocks top and bottom of each block.
