A fantastic and very unusual brooch consisting of an outstanding freeform piece of opal on matrix of roughly triangular form, presented on a custom-built 18ct yellow gold mount. The opal is attached by three pins at the back of the stone, and further held in place by two large white gold claws, each decorated by four tiny cut diamonds.  

The opal is completely natural, and sits on a dark grey host rock.and consists of a thin layer of opal over most of the front and part of the side of the stone.The stone is approx 43mm x 40mm x 7mm in a roughly triangular freeform shape, The opal shows a fantastic play of colour, with all the colours of the rainbow on display. I have tried to capture this in the pictures and short video but it is impossible to do full justice to the astonishing range and variety of colours this amazing piece shows, it is literally beyond the rainbow, with every shade of green, turquoise, gold, orange, yellow and red rippling and scintillating across the entire face of the brooch.  The formation of the opal is fascinating, too, with underlying striations causing the colours to run up and down in lines, with the entire area of opal also having a glittering spangled effect as tiny points of colour pop and flash depending on the orientation of the piece.  This beautiful and unique stone shows a large amount of deep, bright red, which runs up and down the length of the stone, accompanied by bright emerald green, while the left side shows an area of the most beautiful teal-turquoise blue, with violet and all the other colours coming and going throughout.  The opal is very firmly held in place to the chunky gold mount and the two curved white gold claws gently hold the front of the stone, with the small diamonds bringing a tiny flash of light to an already dazzling piece.  This stunning brooch delights the eye and is a unique, one-off piece of jewellery. 

The gold is unmarked for purity, but tests as 18ct gold
