Photograph Notes: In truth this is merely the eroded root of the youngest of three separate volcanic centres that make up the Ardnamurchan volcanic complex. There would have been something like a kilometre of rock above here, all of which has been removed by erosion. What remains is the great ring of hills made up of the Inner Layered Gabbro and the Outer Layered Gabbro, and a series of concentric features inside the ring, including a single true ring-dyke which is hidden by the vegetation in the low ground in the distance. It is impossible to see the complex properly from within it, but perhaps this view gives some idea. It is taken from the northern slopes of Meall Meadhoin, which is the highest point in the inner part of the ring, and in the distance are the western part of the ring, the gap in the ring beyond which is Sanna Bay, and then the northern part of the ring. The pale green is the improved grazing land at Glendrian, and between the foreground and the grazing land is the low ridge of Druim Liath, the 'grey ridge', also made up of layered gabbro. The very youngest intrusion, right in the centre of the complex, is in this view but it is such a modest feature that it is impossible to pick it out from this distance.
