We present a  fine quality marine landscape in oils,  c1900: the bustling fishing port of Scarborough on the North Sea, Yorkshire in northern England, in early dawn moonlight and sea mist, by the acclaimed British marine and landscape painter Walter Linsley Meegan (1859 – 1944).  Yorkshire-born Meegan studied at the Leeds School of Art.  He excelled and his talents recognised while still at college where he was awarded first prize for a painting of a mother and child   He was a pupil of John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836 – 1893), whose style and a  shared interest in realism is reflected across Meegan’s later work.  Megan travelled to the United States, opening a studio on 5th Avenue for several years before returning to England, settling in Scarborough and latterly, with a studio in Liverpool.  Meegan is best known and collected for his atmospheric harbour scenes, often bathed in moonlight,  and this is a typical example of his painting, showing the influence of his mentor, Grimshaw.  Many examples of the work of Walter Linsley Meegan can be seen in the public collection on ArtUK, on artprice.com, arcadia.com, findartunfo.com, artnet.com, askart.com and mutualart, com besides the auction sites of bonhams.com, christies.com and several provincial sites.  Presented in very good overall condition in its original frame,  this painting will look fabulous displayed
