Portrait of Baron Carl Eugen von Imhoff (1778-1847) in uniform of a colonel of Wuerttembergian army - important work of the well known South German miniaturist Baron Christoph Haller von Hallerstein.

Baron Christoph Haller von Hallerstein (1771 Hilpoltstein near Nuremberg - 1839 Nuremberg) devoted himself after studying law to painting, which he studied in Stuttgart. He started with landscape, but soon painted mainly miniatures, made silver point drawings and was an etcher. In 1799 he worked in Dresden where he was on friendly terms with Graff and Grassi. In the following year (sic!) he came to Berlin and after 1806 to Nurnberg. The Berliner years were for the artist especially prolific. He was drawing teacher of the Prussian Crown Prince (later King Friedrich Wilhelm IV), teacher of etching for Prince Anton Heinrich Radziwill and the young Clemens von Metternich, later Prince and Austrian Cancellor. The artist portrayed during these years the whole Prussian royal family. In 1812 he lived for a few months in Paris, but otherwise continuously until his death in Nurnberg.
Works by Haller von Hallerstein belonged to the greatest high noble collections, among them collections of Grand Duke of Hessen, Duke of Cumberland and others. They can also be found in museums of Nurnberg, Dresden, Berlin, Bamberg, etc.

The sitter (he is depicted bearing Commander Cross of the Order of Wuerttembergian Crown and Golden Medal for Conquest of Paris of 1815) later became a Major-General and died in 1847 in Ludwigsburg bei Stuttgart. A portrait of his mother Wilhelmine von Imhoff (also drawn by Haller von Hallerstein) belongs to the collection of the Stockholm National Museum (see our image nr.8).
