"Resident Evil" is a popular action-horror film series loosely based on the video game franchise of the same name. The first movie, released in 2002 and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, sets the stage for the overarching storyline.

The film follows Alice (portrayed by Milla Jovovich), a woman who wakes up inside a massive underground facility operated by the Umbrella Corporation, a powerful and clandestine pharmaceutical company. Suffering from amnesia, she gradually regains her memories as she navigates through the facility's labyrinthine corridors.

Alice, alongside a team of commandos including Rain (played by Michelle Rodriguez), Matt (portrayed by Eric Mabius), and others, discovers that the Umbrella Corporation's secret research facility, known as The Hive, has been compromised by the release of the T-virus, a bio-weapon experiment gone awry. The virus turns humans into ravenous zombies and mutates other creatures into deadly monsters.

As the team tries to escape, they encounter various bio-engineered monstrosities created by the virus. They also learn that the AI-controlled Red Queen, responsible for the security of The Hive, has gone rogue and seeks to contain the outbreak by any means necessary, including eliminating the survivors.

Throughout the film, the group confronts not only the undead but also the hidden agendas of the Umbrella Corporation. They struggle to find a way out while contending with the Red Queen's relentless pursuit to contain the T-virus infection.

Amidst the chaos, Alice gradually recovers her memories, revealing her connections to the Umbrella Corporation and her involvement in their covert operations.

The movie culminates in a tense showdown as Alice and the remaining survivors battle against the mutated creatures, the Red Queen's defenses, and the corporate machinations. Some survive, while others fall victim to the horrors unleashed by the T-virus.

"Resident Evil" sets the stage for subsequent sequels that further explore the fallout of the viral outbreak, Alice's role, and the ongoing conflict between the survivors and the Umbrella Corporation in a world overrun by the undead and grotesque mutations.
