Caption below picture: 'To the Most Noble John, Duke of Bedford, this Plan of the United Parishes of St. Giles in the Fields & St. George, Bloomsbury, is with his Grace's permission most respectfully dedicated by His very grateful & obedient servant N.R. Hewitt'

The combined parishes of St Giles in the Fields and St George Bloomsbury (which was carved out of the former) were administered jointly for many centuries, leading to the conflation of the two. The map covers Bloomsbury between Tottenham Court Road and Brunswick Square; Holborn, Lincolns Inn, and the northern part of Covent Garden including Seven Dials. The map shows the street pattern prior to the construction of Kingsway. Russell Square and the British Museum are located centrally on the map; Smirke's British Museum was under construction at the time of publication
