General Interest

Big band leader Bob Zurke first attracted attention as the pianist with Bob Crosby's orchestra during the years 1937-39. In particular his performance of "Honky Tonk Train Blues" created big record sales for Crosby in 1938. However the pianist's erratic life style was not to Crosby's taste and he had to let him go. In March 1939 Zurke assembled an orchestra which played in a style not unlike that of his former employer and with arrangements by Fud Livingstone and cornet solos by veterans Sterling Bose and drummer Stan King he achieved a measure of success. However the band only lasted a year and thereafter Zurke scraped a living as a piano soloist working in different cities. He died in Los Angeles in 1944. The band cut 30 titles for Victor Records and all but two are presented on this new Hep Collection. Personnel includes: Bob Zurke - (piano), Fud Livingstone - (arranger), Sterling Bose - (cornet), Stan King - (drums)
