"What is vaccaria seed? What is it used for?

The Vaccaria plant grows in China and also parts of Southern and Central Europe. It is also known as the Cow Soapwort or Cowherb.

The Vaccaria plant grows to a height of about 30" or 75cm, with pink and white hermaphroditic flowers.

The whole of plant is then harvested in the summer and left to dry in the sun. After drying the seeds are then removed from their shells, to be dried once again. The seeds can then be used raw or after being parched.

The Vaccaria Seeds are a traditional Chinese medicine, that have bitter and neutral properties, and are associated with the Liver and Stomach meridians. The main function is to invigorate the blood and promote lactation.

Typically, Vaccaria seeds are used to help treat conditions such as Dysmenorrhea or Amenorrhea (painful menstruation), also insufficient lactation following childbirth, and mastitis.

In recent years, Practitioners have used a combination of Vaccaria seeds with safflower and other herbs to treat inflammation of the prostate gland.

Many acupuncturists also use Vaccaria seeds when performing acupuncture or acupressure on the ear.

Also externally the Vaccaria seeds can be ground into a powder to help treat some skin conditions."
