Painted (still) during the 1st Empire or just thereafter (according to the sitter's dress and hairstyle), this relatively large, rectangular miniature by French miniaturist Jean-Baptiste Légé, shows a young hunter with his dog. The male figure visible in the upper left area of the composition is none other than that of the young man's father (we do not imagine to be dealing with portrait of a poacher caught off guard by a forester…).
Jean-Baptiste Légé (1779 Bordeaux - 1846 Bordeaux) was a lithographer and portrait miniaturist. He is probably the same "Légé, friend of Gros", whom Delacluze refers to while recounting the pupils of Jacques-Louis David. Légé's gained much acclaim with his miniature portrait of Duchess d'Angouléme, as well as several other portraits of significant citizens of his native Bordeaux.
