Known for his boldly-coloured depictions of Jølster, the region where he had grown up, Norwegian painter, Nikolai Astrup, bought Sandalstrand and lived here from 1913 until his death.

During this time he developed the estate, building small log houses and filling the garden with his favourite plants and vegetables to feed his growing family. Astrup transformed his home and garden into a complete environment that was not only a comfortable refuge, but also a subject for art.

As you can see from this painting, the estate and the surrounding landscape soon became a major focus and inspiration for the art of his final years.
