The old inscription on verso naming the sitter "Louis XV" is wrong in our opinion: in the 1740s (sitter's hairstyle) the French King was over 30 years old, which does not match the young look of the depicted gentleman.
This very good quality French miniature with a portrait of a young aristocrat (Royalty?) bearing the insignia of the Order of the Holy Spirit (Ordre du Saint-Esprit) strongly resembles works of leading Parisian portrait miniaturist of 1st half of the 18th century, Jean-Baptiste Massé.
Jean-Baptiste Massé (1687 Paris - 1767 ibidem) was a son of goldsmith Jacob Massé, pupil of Jouvenet and Chatillon. At the onset of his career he worked as an egraver and painter on enamel; later, he was chiefly active as miniaturist and painter of portraits in oils; he also executed some historical paintings. In 1714 he became an associate of the Academie Royale, its full member in 1717, and its counsellor in 1740. Massé did the portraits of the Royal Family on many occassions, and although himself a Protestant, he was very well thought of and lived at the Court. He painted numerous miniatures for gift boxes of the Duke de Richelieu, as well as Louis XV. In 1759, the latter appointed him Garde des tableaux. Massé was a friend of Voltaire, who highly praised his art. Liotard and Alphen were amongst his pupils.
