Title: 1895-1900 Photo Album, Western Penna., Lake Erie, Niagara Falls, Sailing, Vacations, Friends, Family, Chautauqua

Description: Hardcover. Probably the album of Elsa Thusnelda Foerster before she met her husband. Foerster, 1881-1951, Allegheny County, was daughter of composer Adolph Foerster and grand-daughter of artist Emil Foerster. She married Ernest Jennings Michael (1881-1971), and they had one son, Robert Hartley Michael (1912-1973), and lived most of their lives in Washington County. 8 x 5 inches, clothbound, very good. Not captioned, but there are various dates, from 1895-1900. Well over 175 small photos, 4 to a page, each photo measuring about 2 x 1.5 inches. Shows Elsa as a teenager up to the age of 20; the first photos show her quite dressed up, with elaborate hats, sometimes dressed in a draped American flag, possibly for some theatrical occasion. The next photos show what look like fancy lakeside houses and properties, pleasure boats, a sloop, possibly Chautauqua, especially since the series after that is of Niagara Falls and vicinity. Photos after that are of friends or family, including two of 2 young men showing the bottoms of their shoes with THURSTON spelled out. After that, another vacation is documented at the shore, with photos of waves, sailboats, men and women (and a dog) playing in the sand next to a long pier, then photos aboard a seacraft of some sort, photo next to the gravestone of a Dr. J. M. Foerster, 1784-1860, and more snaps of friends and family in mainly rural settings. Many of the photos are very charming and evocative in the vernacular style. One of a number of photo albums we are offering from this family. Very good.
