A
SILVER-PLATED SPOON
JOHN,
DUKE OF BEDFORD
PAN BOOKS, 1962 – PAPERBACK - SIGNED BY
AUTHOR
SYNOPSIS: JOHN, DUKE OF BEDFORD AND
HIS CHAOTIC HERITAGE...
Pulling no punches and respecting no-one,
the famous ‘Showman Duke’ tells of his magnificent home, Woburn Abbey and of
the scandals and eccentricities of his forebears.
His father and grandfather were utterly
selfish, opinionated men, hating the world and each other.
His own childhood – never sent to school,
he was brought up in a loveless world of tutors and servants, learning only at
sixteen that he was heir to dukedom.
Succeeding the title in 1953, the new duke
found the magnificent Woburn a chaos of neglect and ruin, but still eternally
lovely. Would Death Duties devour all this
splendour?
How the Abbey was saved, its priceless
contents and superb park preserved for the enjoyment of thousands, completes
these refreshingly candid memoirs of one of to-day’s most colourful
personalities.
