ROYAL MINT
HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY 2006 SILVER PROOF COIN COLLECTION
+
2005 GOLDEN PROOF SUPERMARINE
SPITFIRE TWENTY FIVE DOLLAR COIN
LIMITED EDITION
ITEM DESCRIPTION: Set of seventeen silver proof coins
issued in 2006 to commemorate the eightieth birthday of Queen Elizabeth II with
accompanying Supermarine Spitfire themed golden proof Solomon Islands coin. The
collection is supplied in a handsome wooden presentation box with two velvet
lined trays for the coins and a protective outer box of blue cardboard with ‘ROYAL
MINT’ and an accompanying coat-of–arms embossed in silver on the top. The presentation
box is in near mint condition. There is no significant wear either internally
or externally and the hinges are in perfect working order. The outer box has a
few scuff marks on it, but is in excellent overall condition for its age.
The 2006 silver proof coin collection had an issue limit of 15,000 and this example is number 357, as is confirmed on an accompanying certificate of authenticity. It consists of seventeen crowns from various commonwealth countries with suitable denominations, each struck by the Royal Mint in sterling silver to proof quality. The breakdown is as follows:
Each coin is
sealed in a protective plastic case and is accompanied by an individual certificate
of authenticity. The coins are 38.61mm in diameter and 3.2mm thick, and weigh
approximately 28.28 grams each. They are .925 sterling silver, and each one,
apart from the UK Eightieth Birthday crown, has a .999 gold selective plating. All coins are uncirculated
and in mint condition. The accompanying certificates have specifications
printed on them, along with background information and supporting photographs.
They are also in mint condition with no marks, tears or damage and no fading or
discolouration.
The additional 2005
golden proof Solomon Islands coin was part of a mintage commemorating the role
of the Supermarine Spitfire MK.IIA in the Second World War with an issue limit
of 25,000. It has a denomination of $25 and like the other coins is 38.61mm in diameter,
3.2mm thick, and weighs approximately 28.28 grams. It is .999 fine silver with a 22 carat gold plating, and features a portrait of
Elizabeth II in profile by Raphael Maklouf on the obverse side and a picture of
a Supermarine Spitfire in flight by Don Everhart II on the reverse. This coin is sealed in a plastic
case and is in mint condition. It is supplied with a certificate of
authenticity with specifications and background information printed on it, and
a magazine cut-out featuring an original advert for it. The certificate is free
of marks or wear, though it has two holes punched into the side. It is not known
whether it was supplied with these holes or they were added later. The magazine
advert has some slight creasing, but is in very good overall condition.
This is a beautiful
collection of coins with great historical and nostalgia value, which will
especially appeal to collectors of royal memorabilia. I have included a large
number of photographs, but these really don't do it justice. You are unlikely
to find a better example, so at the low price it is a bargain not to be missed.
