Beautiful, antique,
French door salvaged from an old home in Northeastern, PA. The door
has a solid Douglas fir core covered in a 1/16" Heart pine veneer. The door is
stained on both sides.
Please don't think that "veneer" means inferior
quality.
Unlike the paper-thin veneers used on modern doors and furniture, these veneers
are 1/16" thick and provide strength and stability to the door.
Please
note that heartpine is the non-living, core of a pine tree, and not the soft,
outer, living sap-wood. Since it takes 30 years for a pine tree just to
develop just 1” of heart stock it is rarer, harder, more durable, more
insect & rot resistant, less susceptible to warping and twisting, and is much
more valuable than the cheap, pine lumber that is commonly found at most
hardware stores.
The door has an impressive arrangement of
15,
true-divided windows with old, wavy glass.
Hardware: The door does not come equipped with any hardware.
However, we have a good selection of period hardware to outfit it (check out our eBay
store).

Condition:
The door is strong, sturdy and in great structural condition. It has the typical scrapes,
scratches, and small nail holes that you would expect to find on an old, used door.
The door has a few breaks and spots where the veneer is peeling
(see last photo).
Otherwise, there are no broken or cracked joints, gouges, rot, or warp. The small blemishes they have will disappear or diminish drastically after stripping and sanding.
All
of the glass is intact and in great condition with only subtle scratches.
Swing: The door is set up to
swing into a room towards the right, or away from the room towards the left. We
could modify the door to swing in the opposite direction--message us for a
quote.
Modification: Do you want to
replace the glass with wooden panels, screen/mesh, or something
else? We could modify the door to fit your opening or suite your needs. We could
make a frame, trim or add to the height or width, reverse the swing, plug the
hardware holes, etc. Email us with a small description of what you would like
done, and we'll give you a quote.
