- Walter M. "Wally" Schirra (1923-2007), an original Project Mercury astronaut, orbited the Earth six times in nine hours and 30 minutes. He was also aboard Gemini 6A with Thomas Stafford (December 15-16, 1965) when it rendezvoused with Gemini 7. Schirra also commanded the first manned Apollo mission, Apollo 7, October 11-22, 1968, with Walt Cunningham and Donn Eisele, making him the only astronaut to have participated in all three of NASA's space programs.
