A BIT OF HISTORY

The story of the beautiful Sicilian girl and the legend of the Moor's head .

It is said that in Palermo, around the year 1100 (the period of the domination of the Moors in Sicily at the Kalsa), a beautiful girl lived in a palace who loved to spend her days taking care of the flowers and plants on her balcony.

One day, passing through the Kalsa, a young Moor saw the beautiful girl intent on taking care of the plants, fell in love with her, decided to want her for himself, without delay entered the girl's house and declared his love for her.

The girl, struck by so much feeling, reciprocated the young man's love, but when she learned that the Moor would leave her to return to his lands in the East, where a wife with offspring awaited her, she waited for darkness and as soon as he he put him to sleep, killed him, cut off his head, made a Vase of it where he planted some basil and put it on display outside on the balcony.

Thus, the Moor, unable to leave anymore, would always remain with her. Meanwhile, the basil grew luxuriantly and aroused the envy of all the inhabitants of the neighborhood.

Not to be outdone, they had terracotta Vases built in the shape of Moor's head .

Caltagirone: city of ceramics

The name Caltagirone derives from the Arabic term Qalat al Ghiran, which means "Rock of Vases ".

The manufacturing of ceramics in the Caltagirone area dates back to the Neolithic.

The imprint of the various peoples who have colonized Sicily over the centuries is also perceived in the processing of ceramics, despite this, the potters in their art have always brought out the Sicilian spirit.

The art of working with Sicilian ceramics has been handed down from generation to generation.

The peculiarities of the product depend on the skills of the master potter, his creativity and attention to detail, which is a guarantee of the piece's exclusivity.
