Photograph Notes: Edinburgh-born Col. Robert A. Smith was in the 10th Mississippi Regiment of the Confederate States Army. He was killed at the battle of Mumfordsville [now Munfordville], Kentucky, 'while gallantly leading in the charge of Fort Craig, on 14 September 1862. Aged 26 years'. The right-hand flag of the three is The Confederate Flag, the left-hand one is that of the State of Mississippi, which incorporates the Battle Flag of the Confederacy, and the central flag is the Polk pattern battle flag, which incorporated a St Georges cross, and was designed by Gen. Leonidas Polk. It was issued to units beginning in January 1862. It incorporated eleven white stars on a red St George's cross on a blue field. Ronnie Leask in 2009 [[1207754]] comments on the stone, which he transcribes - at the bottom it says 'sponsored by Murfreesboro S.C.V. [Sons of Confederate Veterans] Camp No.33, Tennessee'. The regiment moved on to Murfreesboro after the defeat at Mumfordsville.
