CHILDREN OF SUNNY SPAIN

We are on a hillside road in Spain.

We do not know enough Spanish to fill those big ears before us so we will not try.

The man who drives the donkeys can do a much better job. We do know enough of the language of these little people to bring friendly smiles to their sunny little faces.

Esteban and Maria are taking their little sister, Rosa, to the spring. There the children will all have a nice cool drink.

Water is very scarce in Spain.

Rosa will fill her little water jug.

They will take the water home.

Spain is a very sunny country.

There are few clouds.

The air is dry.

The days are very hot.

These children live in the Albaicin.

This is a suburb of the city of

Granada. Granada is in Andalusia. Andalusia is a part of Spain that is farthest south. People in Granada never see snow except on the mountain tops.

Look in the distance.

You can see the snow.

It lies on those mountain tops all the year round.

Once long ago the Moors ruled this part of Spain. That is a Moorish palace on that wooded hill.

It is the Alhambra.

Perhaps you know about it. It is very famous.

It is where the Moorish kings lived. Then the Spaniards defeated the Moors. After that King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella lived there.

It was to the

Alhambra Columbus went to seek their help.
