This was in a house I set up for an estate sale. There was no frame on it. It is an old piece of original art done with oil paint. The wooden stretcher bars are stamped on the back of the art and read “Pat’d July 19, 1887 A.H. Abbot I Co.” The stretcher bars have wooden wedges in each corner to stretch and square the linen on the front. The painting has damage - I have tried to show that in the photos. There is a rip in the far left side that is about 2 inches long. There is a hole almost equally between his feet that is about the size of a half a penny. The paint along the left edge and top and bottom corners has chipped off as has the paint on the lower edge of the art. The right side edges are fine as is the top but there is chipping of paint near the pier post to the right of his left foot. The paint loss is most likely due to the artist not using gesso or an undercoat to prep the canvas for the paint. The paint is applied with thick brushstrokes and though simple and folk art style. The face is lovely. The eyes are large and expressive and the expression on his face is very pleasant. There are not any marks or indications of an artist name or date. The linen of the canvas has browned with age. If you wanted to preserve this longer - you could take it to a restoration specialist or research and see of a cleaning with soft cloth, mild soap and then a clear oil paint appropriate varnish over the top might be a good idea. It is fine as it is and would be a great accent for a shabby chic interior with the sea as the theme. The painting measures 26 and a quarter inches high by 15 and a half inches wide.
