Original 1852 US election memorabilia. Excellent condition copper/brass token produced by the supporters of the Democratic Party to be given out to voters who would trade these tokens for goods as if they were currency. These types of tokens were very effective advertising between the years of 1824 and the post-reconstruction era.

1852 - the nation was torn into deeply rooted factions. The northern democrats & southern democrats were completely at odds but were brought together with a middle of the road candidate in Franklin Pierce.

The Whig party - this was their last candidate ever.  Once again deciding to not run the sitting president for re-election, just as they did with John Tyler in 1844, the Whigs sought a popular war hero, General Winfield Scott,  for nomination instead of sitting president Millard Fillmore. Again, history repeated itself and the Whig party once again lost the election. A new candidate would soon bring broken faction parties together in 1860 under the flag of the Republican party- Abraham Lincoln.
