Items #1 (A,B & C) – Offered here are one-of-a-kind Printer’s Proofs, the actual ones used during the pre-press production of the “K.C. Krazy Chase” Official Game Rules Booklet made in 1982. Pre-press printed proof booklets were made from the one-sided test press proofing sheets made during pre-press production. We would do a test-run approval press-proofing of the booklet pages when the pre-press production was completed. All the page spreads were arranged on a one sided press sheet to save money. Then we would trim out the page spreads by hand and glue them together with rubber cement to make actual page working booklets. The purpose for the pre-press press-proofing book was for the Magnavox Odyssey Product Managers & Magnavox Advertising & Graphics Arts Department personnel to review, approve and/or mark changes. The first proof booklet (A) was the first proof Magnavox would see and they marked changes with a red grease pencil (the marker of choice back in the day) on each page (see photos). Then in the second press proof booklet (B) the corrections have been fixed and this was printed and assembled and shown to Magnavox for final approval. This was the step in the process before final composite lithographic films were made and sent to the final production printer who would print the large quantity of booklets to be inserted into each game box. The glue on these printer’s proof booklets have deteriorated over the years and the pages have separated from each other showing their white unprinted backs with some slight discoloring from the dried glue. See the photo where I’ve shown the approval books fanned open showing the non-printed backs. These loose pages are what proves this is an actual pre-press printer’s proof book and not a final production booklet that was inserted into the game boxes. I’ve also provided a photo of the final printed booklet (C) where the pages are actually printed backed up on the same paper.

Item #2 (D) - Offered here is an original 8” x 10” color cover artwork duplicate transparency made in 1982 during the pre-press production of the K.C.’s Krazy Chase Official Rules / Instruction Booklet. There were usually less than five of these made. A duplicate is not an original transparency but a duplicate transparency made directly from the original transparency. To explain the process – The original cover artwork was painted and airbrushed by the artist on art board but that artwork was too big to fit the laser scanner drums of that day. We would photograph that artwork onto 8 X 10 transparency film and use these for color separation in the pre-press production. Magnavox would tell us to make extra duplicate transparencies to ship out into the field if needed. Usually to a magazine that was doing an editorial article on Odyssey2. The actual artwork of any kind was never sent out of our plant. Not very many extra transparencies were made as they were expensive to produce, and what duplicates were made were sent out, used and then thrown away by the end user. No more than a couple of these survived.

The printer’s proofs and the transparency offered here are one-of-kind Odyssey2 original production artwork and actual customer approval proofs from the production of the K.C. Krazy Chase Official Rules booklet back in 1982 and are a piece of Odyssey2 history. Contact me with any questions.

These pieces are in excellent condition as they have been in climate-controlled storage for decades.

Authenticity of this item – I was personally involved in the print production of this piece. My family owned a company by the name of Precision Litho, Inc. and Precision Litho of Tennessee, Inc. that were the pre-press supplier for Magnavox back in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. I was personally involved in the print production of Magnavox Odyssey2 print materials. I was the salesman and sales/service person handling the Magnavox account from the late 70s through the 90s for my company. I dealt directly with the Magnavox Advertising and Graphic Arts Departments on a daily bases in Fort Wayne, IN and then Knoxville, TN. My company was a pre-press lithographic trade shop and we produced lithographic film, pre-press proofs, press proofing and offset printing for Magnavox in our plants in Fort Wayne, IN and Knoxville, TN. Magnavox was located in Fort Wayne until 1980 when they moved their corporate headquarters to Knoxville, TN. We opened our second production facility in Knoxville, TN in 1980 to continue serving Magnavox. We produced all Magnavox’s catalogs, brochures, spec sheets and other collateral printed pieces for their Odyssey, Television, Video and Audio lines. We also did pre-press and printing for other Philips Consumer Electronics USA brands as well like Sylvania and Philco Consumer Electronics. The Odyssey items I’m selling have been in my company’s possession and then in my possession since they were used for print production in the 70s and 80s.

Save me as a seller as I on occasion will list on eBay one-of-a-kind original artwork and pre-press proofs, etc. from Magnavox and other companies we did work for like Bear Archery, The 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville and other interesting original artwork and proofs.
