Handsome large-format antique lithographed map in original hand color, with decorative scrollwork border, printed more than 160 years ago.

  • The map depicts the Roman Empire at its greatest extent, including present-day England, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Greece, and Turkey, as well as northern Africa and the Near East.


  • Places are identified in Latin by their ancient names and also labeled, in smaller text, with their modern names.


  • The image area measures a generous 33.5 x 52.2 cm [13¼" x 21"]. Longitude is measured from Greenwich and Ferro, and there are two distance scales, calibrated in Roman Miles and Statute Miles.


  • Among the labeled places on the map are Armenia, Campania, Mesopotamia, Dacia, Sarmatia, Assyria, Macedonia, Cappadocia, Babylonia, and many others, on a scale of 200 geographical miles to one inch.


  • Insets in the upper right corner depict Greece and Italy, with smaller insets showing the region around Rome and Campania.


  • This map is titled Johnson's Roman Empire, Imperium Romanorum Latissime Patens and was published by A.J. Johnson, New York, in 1864.


  • Condition:  This map is in very good condition, with a vertical center fold, as issued, wide margins, and no rips, tears, or writing. There are faint water stains near the upper corners and a tiny chip at the top right. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.


  • Letterpress text on the reverse side provides a chronological summary of events during the Civil War, between early February and late April, 1863.
