I purchased this lens new in May 2000 from an authorized Leica store the USA. This lens is the first version (Model 11490 on lens, 11894 on box) in Silver Chrome. I used it lightly for 18 months, but then switched to a black version for lighter weight. I had this silver lens sent to Leica service in 2003 for a CLA intending to sell it, but found it difficult to part with it, as it is such a historic lens. It was featured on the cover of a Leica lens compendium in 2001 (see photo) as a hallmark of Leica engineering. One respected technical reviewer of this lens stated in 2001 that it's performance at f/4 was equivalent to contemporary Leica lenses of 28, 35 and 50mm fixed focal lengths at f/4, which is remarkable given the mechanical complexity of the multi focal length Tri-Elmar. But the time has come to pass it on!

Note that this model of the Tri-Elmar is the only one available in Silver Chrome, except for the 2000 LHSA Limited Edition 11900, which as a collector's item had a very small production run (and a very high price). That limited edition lens is based on this lens.

Leica Tri-Elmar M, f/4 28-35-50mm, Silver Chrome, 456 grams

First about the model number discrepancy. I believe when Leica first started production of the Tri-Elmar, both the black and the silver versions were labeled with model number 11890 (see photo). Then perhaps for clarity in marketing, Leica started calling the silver version a different model number: 11894. This accounts for the 11894 on the box. Note that most importantly the serial number on the box matches the serial number on the lens.

The optics are clear and free of any scratches, dust or hazing. Focusing is smooth at all three focal lengths, and the focal length selection action clicks decisively into each of the three positions. There are light surface scratches in one area on the right side of exterior lens barrel (see photo), some light abrasions on the lens mount, and some of the set screws show usage during the CLA done by Leica (see photo) Because of these three things, I am rating this lens EXC+ rather than  Mint -. Please look at the photos and contact me for questions as condition ratings are inherently subjective.

Includes case (EXC+), Box (EXC -), lens caps, and all original packing and original owner documentation (see photo)

As mentioned above, I stopped using this lens after 18 months of light usage because I purchased a black version for weight reduction. This weight consideration was important to me because I found the Tri-Elmar triple focal length capability ideal as a lightweight travel lens. I continue to heavily use the black version of this lens.

I do not accept returns unless the item is not as described in the listing. I am a long time, occasional eBay seller, including two Leica M6 TTLs and a Noctilux all  in EXC+ condition in the last two years, and have never received a negative rating or a return request.

Shipping only to USA and Canada. Shipping costs shown on listing are for USPS Priority with signature required. Additional services available for extra cost.
