Performance:

In a world where applied scientists design innovative materials at the atomic scale there is one that stands out from the rest.  Graphene is the wonder material of the 21st century.  It consists of only one layer of oriented carbon atoms.  Stronger than diamond, it is the toughest substance known to humankind.   Graphene’s two-dimensional structure is an advanced material which is particularly suited for use as a multi-functional additive in coatings.  Now AQUAPLAS® incorporates graphene into this high-performance speaker cone coating.

Composition:

Graphene is a single layer of bonded carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb structure.  Pure and highly ordered graphene’s unique features make it extremely useful in speaker cone coatings.  In this composition, both graphene and AQUAPLAS® retain their own benefits, but together produce properties not achieved alone.  Graphene is the primary load-carrier.  The Aquaplas® transfers the load between the graphene molecules and protects them from environmental damage.

The tensile and flexural strength of the graphene plays a significant role in reinforcing Aquaplas®.  The tensile strength helpsresist destructive forces while the flexural strength helps resist bending. The graphene and the high polymer content provide these properties essential to a long-lasting cone.  The graphene helps prevent cracking and breakage.  Strength is important any time you create a cone.  The graphene provides added value to the Aquaplas® by increasing its strength.

 Application:

AQUAPLAS® designed this coating for untreated, uncoated paper cones.  To apply to other materials, prime first with asuitable and reliable product.   The primer is accountable for itsown adherence to the cone.

We recommend Aquaplas® Meld 007 Speaker Primer which bonds to tough-to-coat materials.

Amount to apply:

Realize all the benefits of AQUAPLAS® with just a thin coat without affecting the Thiele-Small Parameters of the driver.  If added mass is desired and the moving mechanical mass (Mms) of the driver is known, add only an equal amount of mass as a maximum.  Do not apply over a 2mm thickness.  If the moving mechanical mass (Mms) of the driver is unknown observe a 1 mm. thickness as an upper limit.  It bonds well to itself, choose thin coats over thick ones.  Keep a record of the amount of coating added.   If you require a particular color, AQUAPLAS® Graphene is paint-able after completely dried and cured.

Black verses gray: Starting in the 1970’s, JBL used the term black to distinguish it from the white coating,it is grayer than it is black.

Effects of added mass:

One can calculate the effects of adding AQUAPLAS®Graphene on a driver’s parameters.  Speaker design computer software now makes these calculations a breeze.  They make “what if” designs and simulations almost instantaneous.  For an example search for, mh-audio.nl, to calculate the effect of additional mass on the Thiele-Small Parameters.

 What do our customers say?

“This worked perfectly to refresh a couple of stained JBL woofers.  I thinned it down with water and gave them a couple of light coats so as not to add too much mass.  Thanks!”
