ILLUSTRATOR/ARTIST: Benjamin Sayre Cory Kilvert was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 1879 and died in New York City in 1946. He was the son of Francis Edwin Kilvert, mayor of Hamilton, Ontario (1877-78), Conservative Member of Parliament (1878-1887) and Collector of His Majesty's Customs for the Port of Hamilton (1887-1910).

As a very young man, Kilvert left Canada to study at the Art Students' League in New York City where his instructor was Robert Henri (1865-1929) a member of the so-called Eight, whose members in painting life as it actually appears without making any attempt to romanticize it were stigmatized as "The Ashcan School."

SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS/DESCRIPTIVE WORDS:

The Ladies' World was a monthly periodical for women in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was founded in 1886, and published in New York City by S. H. Moore & Co. In the space of thirteen months, the magazine published three short stories by L. Frank Baum:

  • "The Man-Fairy" (December 1910)
  • "The Tramp and the Baby" (October 1911)
  • "Bessie's Fairy Tale" (December 1911).

The Ladies' World was bought by McClure Publications in 1912, and upgraded from a periodical printed on cheap newsprint to a glossier magazine with some full-color covers. It ceased publication in June 1918.
