Antique French Pencil Drawing, View of the Troglodyte Wine Cellar

of the Château of Marigny-Brizay, Haut-Poitou, Gallo-Roman Quarry

This exquisitely detailed antique French pencil drawing with white highlights (“mine de plomb rehaussée de blanc”), depicts the troglodyte wine cellar of the Château of Marigny-Brizay, near Poitiers. The village of Marigny-Brizay is well known for its wine and is located in the Haut-Poitou winemaking region. A ladder, a cart, a wine barrel and several chickens provide charming details to this very accurate depiction of troglodyte wine cellar.  The troglodyte caves at Marigny-Brizay were quarries during the Gallo-Roman period and later became used for storing wine. The notation “Cave du Château de Marigny-Brisay. Vienne” is written on the right, but with a 19th century spelling, “Brisay”,  instead of “Brizay”. This drawing was executed on “Vidalon-lès Annonay” paper as shown by the watermark near the bottom of the page. It is in very good condition with the exception of small creases at the corners and a purple ink stain. This piece will add a fascinating addition to your art collection or an authentic “French” touch to your wine cellar!
