Antique French Drawing, French Revolution Soldier, Death Hussar,
1792 Battle of Valmy, Windmill, Signed, 1840’s
This beautifully executed antique French drawing depicts a scene at the Battle of Valmy in 1792, where the French Army during the French Revolution had its first victory. Valmy is east of Paris and near the city of Reims in the Champagne region. The central figure in the drawing is a “Hussard de la Mort”, or soldier of the “Death Hussars”, a French cavalry company created during the Revolution, as attested by his costume and accessories including his mustache and hair style (tresses called cadenettes), the mirliton hat on his head, his saber, black vest with brandenbourgs or braided fasteners, and the skull and crossbones on his shoulder sleeve. The skull and crossbones, symbol of the company, is also found on the sabretache, or flat bag suspended from his belt. The soldier holds the red, white and blue French flag. Another Death Hussar is in the foreground. The famous windmill, symbol of Valmy, is in the background at the top of the hill. Signed and offered with its original mat and cardboard backing, this drawing is in very good condition with the exception of yellowing, some marks of aging and the mat shows stains and aging.
