Antique French Silver Plated Salt & Pepper Cellar,

Signed Halphen, Napoleon III, 19th Century

This handsome antique French footed salt and pepper cellar is engraved with a “guillochis” work pattern and ornamented with rows of beads. The elegantly shaped handle completes the stylish design of the piece. It bears the maker’s marks used by the Halphen brothers during the period of the Second Empire of Napoleon III. The first maker’s mark consists of the image of a ram’s head, the symbol of the Halphen company. The second maker’s mark consists of the name “Halphen" inside a rectangle. The third mark, the number “6” in a square, indicates the silver content in grams. It also bears the series number of the piece, “334840”. The Halphen company was created in 1850. The Halphen brothers invented a silver alloy in the 1850’s which they named “Alfenide”. At the end of the 1880’s, the Alfenide Company was bought out by the Maison Christofle, also renowned for their silver plated flatware. The Alfenide factories continued production until the mid-1930’s and were among the suppliers of silverware for the many of the famous French Transatlantic liners between 1910-1920. This salt and pepper cellar is in very good condition with the exception of a few darkened areas, not unusual for a piece which is more than 150 years old. It will add an authentic “French” touch to your table as well as an excellent addition to your collection. Please refer to the detailed photos on this page.
