Vintage French Statue Figurine from Provence,

Couple from Arles on Horse

This vintage French chalkware statue, dated on the front of the base, shows a typical “cowboy” from the Camargue region and a young woman in the traditional costume of Arles. The Camargue is a region of Provence located south of Arles between the Mediterranean and the Rhône River delta. Made up of ponds, rice paddles and marshlands, the Camargue is known for its wild pink flamingos, the Gipsy pilgrimage site of Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer and its cowboys. The “cowboys” of the Camargue, or “Gardians” in French, tend the native “Camarguais” breeds of bulls and horses. Their traditional costume consists of a colored or patterned shirt, a tie and a black felt hat. Every three years the people of Arles, the capital of the Camargue, elects its “Queen”. The “Gardians” parade on horseback with the queen and her court mounted behind them riding sidesaddle, as seen on this figurine. The young women of Arles have always been renowned for their beauty, attested to by no less than six portraits entitle “The Arlesienne” painted by Vincent Van Gogh during his stay in the area. This piece have significant signs of damage and old repairs, especially on two feet of the horse, the neck of the girl and the shoulder and the head of the man. Please refer to the detailed photos on this page.
